ABOUT SONOMA

The name Sonoma, and the sobriquet "Valley of the Moon," is traditionally said to be derived from an indigenous word for "many moons," though this notion is today considered romantic. It is however true that indigenous people lived here for twelve thousand years before the Spanish, Mexicans, and Americans arrived; and the name Sonoma may actually be derived, more prosaically, from a Mayakmah word, "noma," for town.
